'IPC Media' is the chosen publisher for my magazine. I have chosen this because the company also publishes 'NME' which has the same sort of genre as the magazine I am making. IPC Media (formerly International Publishing Corporation), a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc, is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year.
I recently found a 'NME Radio' app for my iPod touch. I thought it would be a good idea to listen to it from time to time as I would gain knowlege of new artists and bands so therfore, I could but some research into them and it could help me with my music magazine.
NME Radio is the radio station from NME magazine, that broadcasts in a new and alternative music format. It first began broadcasting on 24 June 2008. Click here to listen to the live show.
I have became fond of this band ever since my friend Chloe introduced me to them. She has seen them live and said they were extremely good, I will hopefully be going to see them when they are next touring.
I thought it would be a good idea to research this particular indie band because of they're sense of style and fashion. When I take shots for my music magazine I will take into account what the members of Two Door Cinema Club like to wear. This would be helpful because when looking at a front of a magazine and in particular the main image, you should then know what sort of genre the magazine is.
One Night Only are an English rock band from Helmsley, North Yorkshire formed in 2003. One Night Only formed in summer 2003, consisting initially of Mark Hayton, Daniel Parkin, Sam Ford and Kai Smith. The band did not have a vocalist until George Craig, a friend of Ford's brother, joined in a practice. He was asked to be the vocalist, but insisted on playing guitar as well. Smith then left the band.
The name, One Night Only, came about when asked to play a gig. They did not have a name at the time and so came up with One Night Only, intending the title to, literally, last for only one night, however the name stuck to this day. They performed their first gig on 12 December 2003 in Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall, which became a popular venue in their early days. In 2005, keyboardist Jack Sails joined the band and in 2010 James Craig (George's brother), became the new drummer of the band as Sam Ford left.Since then they have several tours and have been to various festivals. I saw them live in October last year.
One Night Only are my favourite band and they tie in with the genre of my music magazine Indie. I can take inspiration from them as the are a current band and part of my magazine will be focusing on current artists/bands.
The Zombies are an English rock band. Formed in 1961 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent on piano and Colin Blunstone on vocals, the band scored US hits in the mid- and late-1960s with "She's Not There", "Tell Her No", and "Time of the Season". Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle, comprising twelve songs by the group's principal songwriters, Argent and Chris White, is ranked 80 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
I decided to research The Zombies as they are my favourite old band because they are unique, different and have a distinctive style.
The Smiths were an English rock band, formed in Manchester in 1982. Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey (vocals) and Johnny Marr (guitar), the band also included Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums). Critics have called them the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s.
The group were signed to the independent record label Rough Trade Records, for whom they released four studio albums and several compilations, as well as numerous non-LP singles. Although they had limited commercial success outside the UK while they were still together, and never released a single that charted higher than number 10 in their home country, The Smiths won a growing following, and remain cult and commercial favourites. The band broke up in 1987 amid disagreements between Morrissey and Marr and have turned down several offers to reunite since then.
I decided to do some research into some old indie bands as I need to get an idea of what I am going to put into my magazine. I enjoy listening to The Smiths and Morrissey is a music legend as he is a brilliant lyric writer.
Fuck Yeah Indie Music Tumblr - This is a blog from the well known blogging site 'Tumblr'. The blog is about indie music and all that has to so with it. The creater not only blogs about well known indie artists (old and new) but also upcoming ones that are are trying to make it into the mucic scene.
The Independent Style Magazine - 'Indie' is an Internet fashion magazine, published quarterly on the Internet. I really like the layout and look of this magazine so, it will be useful when I come to make my own. Also, it is to do with indie fashion and I want to include this element in my magazine.
Lookbook - 'Lookbook' is an online collection of photographs compiled to show off a model, a photographer, a style, or a clothing line. The clothes and poses on 'Lookbook' will help me when taking photographs for my magazine.
I regularly go to gigs all over the UK. Going to see a band or artist live is one of my favourite things to do. As well as seeing my favourite artists that I know and love I also like seeing new and upcoming musicians too.
Another reason for my love of seeing live music is that the atmosphere in the room is amazing! Also you get more interaction with the band and essentially they become more real to you. You can socialize with other people with whom you can relate and you get to enjoy the music in its purest form.
Finally, live music makes the musicians entirely responsible for their music, not the studios, it takes them out of their 'comfort zone'. You can now see the performer(s) without the studio and technology that makes them 'better', but you can see them free and see their natural talent. That is what makes a real musician.
